Raymond Burr and Robert Benevides shared a mutual interest in the cultivation and hybridization of orchids. This shared hobby eventually grew into a commercial venture, Sea God Nurseries, which gained international recognition in its 20 years. During this period, Burr and Benevides were responsible for the hybridization of over 2,000 new orchids.

They moved their orchid nursery to Dry Creek Valley in 1980. While no longer hybridizing, Robert Benevides continues to maintain their core collection. There are over a thousand varieties raised in the nursery. When in bloom, these varieties are displayed in the Tasting Room.

The Laelia purpurata is the national flower from Brazil. It is found naturally in it's many different color forms in the rain forest (of Brazil): alba (pure white), vinicolor (purple lip), werkhauseri (slate blue lip), carnea (pink lip).
